Flasheye
is at the forefront of a groundbreaking project currently being tested at the
Öjebyn Forensic Psychiatry facility. This project explores the potential of 3D
LiDAR technology, a cutting-edge sensor-based system that reacts to movement
and anomalies, as an innovative complement to traditional camera surveillance.
The Öjebyn
team, first encountered LiDAR technology at a trade fair last year. Intrigued
by its capabilities, they initiated a collaboration with Flasheye, a
Luleå-based company that won an award in their category at the fair. This
partnership led to the current pilot project at Öjebyn.
At the
heart of this initiative is Flasheye’s 3D sensing technology, which was
initially developed for industrial applications but is now making significant
inroads into the security sector. The technology operates by capturing the
entire environment in 3D, similar to how distance-measuring tools work, but at
a far more advanced level. Millions of measurements are taken every second,
with Flasheye’s software interpreting the data to monitor the surroundings in
real-time.
We
see this as a major enhancement to our existing camera surveillance
system
Ronny Stenberg, head of Security.
A small
section of the facility's outdoor area is currently under LiDAR surveillance,
and if the pilot proves successful, the plan is to extend coverage to create a
digital dome over the entire facility. This would protect against potential
threats such as drones, thrown objects, or unauthorized individuals approaching
the premises.
Flasheye’s
technology offers several advantages over traditional cameras. LiDAR is less
affected by weather and lighting conditions, and it focuses on detecting
movement rather than capturing identities, making it a more privacy-conscious
option. The system works by identifying potential issues and then directing
cameras to focus on specific areas, allowing security operators to respond more
effectively.
This
collaboration is invaluable, not only does it allow us to refine our technology through
real-world testing, but it also provides Öjebyn with an opportunity to fill
gaps in their surveillance system in a more cost-effective manner.
Ida Rehnström, Deputy CEO at Flasheye.
As the
project progresses, it is attracting attention from the Swedish Prison and
Probation Service and other regions, underscoring the growing demand for
advanced, integrated surveillance solutions in critical environments.
For
Flasheye, the success of this project represents a significant step forward in
bringing advanced 3D monitoring technology to broader applications within the
security industry.
